Recycling Fundraisers Are The New Fad

A new fad in the recycling world has been popping up across the country lately, and all indications point at a huge success, meaning that it's more likely than not here to stay.

This fad, of course, is recycling fundraisers, a great way that any group or organization can raise some cash without selling relatively useless items or raffle tickets! At the same time, recycling has a largely positive effect on multiple aspects of the environment and the local economy. The saved space at landfills results in a longer lifetime for the landfill, thus saving hundreds of thousands (or millions, depending on the size and scope) in taxpayer dollars.

How Recycling Fundraisers Work

Recycled goods have value – a lot more than people think. That is because there is valuable bronze, silver or gold in virtually all recycled electronic goods. In addition, there is value in plastic products and clothing goods as well.

To hold a recycling fundraiser, you encourage attendees to bring their “junk” in as a donation. Depending on your organization, you may even be able to offer a tax write-off to the donators. While the best thing to accept are e-waste – unused or broken electronics – you can also take in printer cartridges, old computers and more. The idea is to collect and sort as much as possible – the more weight, the more money raised.

Who benefits from recycling fundraisers?

Unlike other school fundraisers where nobody benefits, or maybe a lucky raffle winner, there is a benefit to every party involved with recycling fundraisers. Many people have electronic junk laying around that they know shouldn’t go in a dumpster but have no idea what to do with it. They are finally getting rid of their junk while possibly even gaining a write off. If you want to maximize the amount fundraised, you can sort the items (e.g. laptops, cell phones, circuit boards, etc…) and sell them separately. The biggest winner in this equation is the environment. The more people who encourage recycling for any reason the better off we will all be.
